When I got to the labor ward today there was already 3 beds full, so I knew it was going to be a busy day. I arrived at 9 am by 4 pm we had delivered 10 babies and that included one set of twins. I've never delivered twins before, so that was a great experience for me. I asked the nurse how many twins she has delivered and she said so many she lost count. We did the delivery together, so thankful for these lovely nurses that work so hard!! I actually missed one birth because I ran home to get some supplies. Glad I grabbed a protein bar, because I would not have had time for lunch.
Out of all those births there was no episotomys and very few tears. All babies were healthy, but one was only 4 and a half lbs. No special treatment for that little girl. Just "see if you can get her to latch". I am praying by today she got her to latch and eat. She seemed quite strong!
A couple of other babies didn't want to cry and it's interesting how little black babies can still look blue😳
I had a group of students come in that said we are ready for you to teach us!! That gave me so much joy! We had fun doing a birth together and teaching newborn exams. After the baby is born here, very little happens with the newborn. They aren't watched close or given an exam, mostly because of lack of nurses. So when we get a chance we teach newborn exam and try not to let it scare us to have a baby sitting in a bed, wrapped in a ton of heavy blankets without anyone checking on them.
