This was not in my plans!!! But here i am in Nairobi and was offered a sightseeing trip to an elephant orphanage, a giraffe park and a bead factory. Sure, I thought I might as well. Many people now are traveling to Nairobi just to sight see!
The first stop was the Elephant Orphanage. Elephants need their mothers milk for 3 years. So an orphan cannot make it in the wild. They have to be fed every 3 hours, even in the night, so they have people that sleep in the same place with them. They have 19 baby elephants here. ranging from 8 mo to 2.5. All the elephants eventually go back in the wild, but it takes years to get them adapted again. They were so friendly they came up to people and let them pet them.
Next I was taken to the Giraffe park. It was amazing! I have never been this close to a giraffes and they were eating right out of our hands! They are really friendly amazing animals. Do you know that they only sleep 5-30 min everyday? Their tongue is rough and their eyes are so cute with long lashes.
The next place we stopped was the house "out of Africa" was filmed. Karen the lady that the book was about, this was her house, and the whole area is named after her. I don't really remember the story so I just downloaded it on my kindle to read. She must have been quite the lady!
Then the bead place: 2 ladies started this buisiness to create jobs for single moms. They started out hiring a few ladies, and now employe over 340 women, plus 10 men! They start with getting dirt, just regular dirt! That dirt gets turned into clay with a series of big tanks and water, then the women shape the clay
into jewelry, cups, pottery etc. They have multiple kilns there to fire the clay. then the ladies hand paint everything. It's beautiful. These are necklaces, and bracelets.
We stopped at the grocery store to get some mangos! Drove through some beautiful areas and then through traffic. This was my day in beautiful Kenya!
