I was invited to a special midwifery weekend. There’s a school down in Bozeman specifically for Student midwives who want to become missionaries. There were 10 students this last session and most were young girls that weren’t sure exactly what their next step was, but what a great place to seek God and do what's set before them.
I was invited as an older midwife to teach the younger, new midwives, as the Bible talks about in Timothy. It was at an incredible Airbnb in Gallatin Canyon and it was so beautiful. Such a relaxing weekend. Not only physically were we spoiled, but so encouraged spiritually too! The friendships and connections we made were amazing!
Friday and Sat we had lots of time to answer questions and get to know the girls.
On Sunday morning Amy, the leader of the school had a teaching for all of us. The thing that spoke to me the most was based on the story of Joseph. (Genesis 37-50)
She said "Don't despise the time in the pit". Or " don't despise the time in the jail, dungeon, horrible place". Using Joseph as an example of one that had plenty to despise about his life. Plenty to get down in the dumps about! Instead he seemed to make use of those times while he waited and trusted God. No matter what! I'm sure he did not understand why God allowed these things, yet he continued to trust and wait.
This time, in the pit or in the dungeon, he instead did the best he could while there. He thought about others, he acted on love, he saw others needs. So often when we are in the bottom, all we can see is our own problems. But making ourselves get out of our own problems and see the hurting around us, or the needy. See what we can do while in the pit, while having faith, while trusting this won't be long, but busy with God's work while we are there. Paul was another example of this; being in jail and working like crazy while he was there.
So this little part of the sermon really spoke to me. Don't despise our time in the pit. No matter how deep, see what God can do while in the pit, and look forward to knowing God can bring good out of the pit, and although it can take time, we won't be there forever!
