It was a wonderful busy first day today!!! I am so happy to be here and be able to be involved in such a wonderful ministry! It was really fun seeing the students again that I taught last time I was here and they couldn't wait to see me. It's so funny because they were so shy last time and I could hardly get them to interact, and now they seem so chatty and they ask me lots of questions already!! They told me they loved my classes and want me to teach them again!!! What a great way to start my time here!!
This morning the birth room only had one lady in there, so we had time to organize the supplies I brought along with a couple of other volunteers and a very helpful young man! ( the OB doctors son, is 5 years old and so fun!)
My first birth I was involved in was a C section and the OR is very different from home.
I had a great meeting with the nursing director about teaching classes. She is so welcoming and very happy about the classes I'm going to teach and hoping to implement some updated practices.
Although I can help here and there with births, I feel like the teaching will have lasting effects.
These were some beautiful women sitting outside the woman's ward.
Later I enjoyed helping a mom with the delivery of her 2nd baby. It's so easy to want to take over and criticize the way things are done in the birth room normally, because we feel like our ways are better. Trying to understand why they do things and not offend while we all learn from each other. It's a hard dance and something we volunteers have to work through. Us Americans have things good and the moms here have to endure so much! I want so badly to give these moms a beautiful birth, but mixing culture, limited resources and teaching that is out of date, is a dance that can be challenging.
