Got to the hospital and did rounds with the OB. The OB doctor has had some really tough cases the last few days in the middle of the night. . The emotional part of volunteering here can be so difficult at times and I was hurting for what she had to go through. I'm so greatful she's here though. In this type of place you often get put into a position where you have to take care of something that is out of your normal scope of practice. I am so grateful for having a OB to call on when the babies heart beat drops to 60 with every contraction! Again today we had that situation. Praise the Lord, baby and mama are good! We could sure use a pediatrician and respiratory therapist sometimes. I'm wanting to go home and learn a lot of things I've never needed in America.
So Kaitlyn (a pediatric nurse here for a month) and I got to teach 2 classes today. One was just because it was slow and there were about 7 student nurses sitting around, I said "lets have a class". One student said he had missed the "helping babies breathe" class the other day. So we started there again. Then I let Kaitlyn take over and teach about respiratory distress in a newborn, taking vitals, newborn exams. We have 2 fake babies thankfully that we can use for practice..
While we were still getting ready for that class, the education supervisor came in and asked if we could teach another class at 4:30. This was a new group of students that we hadn't met before, and they were just a little more shy. I'm excited to be able to continue with education!!! Planning my next trip here already and what I need to bring and what I need to learn to pass on!
