Our day started out with a good breakfast of eggs and toast with peanut butter, which is made here in Uganda. Then up to the birth center where we were teaching a class on the pulse oximeter. This is an expensive little piece of equipment, that is very useful when it comes to babies. I had it on a "want list" for our church and someone so graciously donated one for me to bring. They were very excited about this piece of equipment as it is so useful for. the newborn.
One of the volenteers here now just happens to be a cardiac nurse. So with her help and all 3 of us midwives taught the staff how to use them and when. They are useful if a baby isn't breathing well, and you need to know how much or if you should be giving oxygen, but also it can be useful in checking for heart defects.
When teaching the class we said something about wishing we had a real baby to practice on. One of the Ugandan midwives said "I'll go get one". She went to a neighbors house and got baby Moses. He was a great model for us!
After lunch we went on 2 home postpartum visits.
The first home visit was in a Muslim home. The mother was so sweet and invited us in her home. She even let us pray for her. The homes here are all made of brick. they make the brick themselves out of the red dirt that is all around here. Then they fire them and build a very small house, but sturdy. I would guess most houses are 200-500 square feet.
Wednesday was another busy day with immunization clinic in the morning and riding motorcycles to home visits! The whole trip little kids are waving and shouting out "mazunga". (White people) Yesterday our driver was getting teased for having two old white ladies on his motorcycle! We checked out the babies, moms and left them a gift including a receiving blanket and lifesavers candies for the older children! The Mom's were so excited to see us. The one family she had all the children home, because they couldn't afford the school fees this year. So thankful for the donations to send more kids through school! The other mom is in the program already here, and she is such a precious mom. Told us some of her testimony and how God has taken care of her through some horrible situations.. So good to be showing love to these moms! We pray for them before we leave.
Charting here is very different. They have all these huge books and records are kept for each child in there, plus they have a booklet they bring with them. We came up with a system and it went fairly smooth.
