All of us volunteers were invited to the hospital supervisors house for dinner. 7:30 pm is a typical time for dinner around here. This was my first chance to eat a Kenyan dinner and it was so good! I didn't ask what the meat was until after I ate it, just in case it was something strange. But it turned out it was lamb meat. It didn't have the strong taste of lamb I've tasted in America. It was incredible.
It was a stew, with the lamb meat and potatoes, carrots. Cooked cabbage sliced very thin with, carrots and onions. Rice and chipoli, which is a type of tortilla type bread.
Typical Kenyan food seems to be very similar day to day. Very little variety. Always Chai in the morning. Which is milk, tea and sugar with spices. Sometimes they have a porridge midmorning. Lunch is usually beans and rice or beans and a cornmeal mush type stuff. Dinner is similar again. Plus they eat a lot of leafy greens and cabbage. They do drink pop, but I'm thinking that's more of a treat for holidays or when your in labor. For some reason the laboring moms think orange pop is what you drink in labor.
We are working to get a water filter in the labor room as it's difficult to get a mom clean water to drink the way it is now.
