We are driving back towards our airbnb when Robin sees this neat looking town in the hills. She says "lets go see it". It was funny, because that's what I did a couple days before and now she was catching on to my way of adventure!
So we had to turn off our map program, since we didn't know the name of the town and just start heading that way.
It gives you this feeling of a challenge and excitement as you find the right road and actually find it! It was literally a city on a top of a hill. Like you walk to once side and see the one valley, and walk to the other side and see the valley with the sea. It was beautiful.
The roads were super skinny, the town was super old. It was Sunday and everything was closed.
There were of course clusters of men sitting around visiting and we wondered what they were saying about us.
We walked to the top where there was the castle. It was all closed up too.
It turns out the town is called Scarlino. This Fortress was built in the 13th century.
"Scarlino still preserves its medieval atmosphere thanks to the ancient walls. They start from the Fortress and surround the entire village, made up of narrow streets and alleys, with only 3 main town doors." This is very true, as I started on a road up to the town and the roads got really, really skinny. So I quickly parked out of there and we walked.
But on the way out I had to drive on one of those skinny roads to get out of town. The road was so skinny, you could reach your hand out of the window and touch the walls! I was freaking out a bit and Robin was saying encouraging stuff like "you can do this".......
I was giggling and nervous, but we made it through!
We saw this lady walking these very steep streets walking in high heals! We began talking to her and she spoke no English, but we had quite a long conversation with her. Finally figured out she was there for a wedding. It was so fun, laughing, trying to figure out communicating! At one point I asked her if she was here to see grandchildren and she made a face, like no way! We thought it was so funny!
We saw sheep grazing and sleeping and a horse that looked like it was from a movie!
So glad for our little excursion! Typed our Airbnb into our maps and back on the road we go!
