What an incredible day! I started my day going to a class with the nurses on Xray radiation, because the director wanted to meet me there and give me a tour of the hospital. Her name is Joyce too! I've actually met 3 Joyce's here so far!
I then joined the OB Doctor who is volunteering here from Australia, to go on rounds. This is nice way to start the day so you meet or check up on almost all the patients in our ward. Our ward the Maternity ward.
After rounds the labor room had only one lady in it that was being induced, so I helped fold guaze. They get the gauze in rolls and cut and fold it. It didn't take long before our labor ward was full though.
One was a transfer to us, because baby was having some issues. Well to me it was pretty serious issues, and I was expecting a quick C Section, but it wasn't going fast enough for me! I finally wheeled her up to surgery myself and left the nurses working on paperwork hoping that we could at least get her prepped. But nothing can be started without paperwork in order. I have been so happy for the dopplers I was able to bring and now there is one in the operating room too. It's so important to have good equipment! So we waited and I kept listening to heart tones....... Finally the C section was started and another nurse and I waited to take the baby. This baby needed some help, but was fine pretty quickly and I took him back to the maternity ward. Just so many things different than how they would be in America, you try to relax and do the best you can. I again was so thankful for the Pulse oximeter I was able to bring because of so many generous donations. It has helped already so many times I can't count!!!
So next we had a mom who had been laboring most of the day getting close to delivery and the nurses said, we want you to do the birth. I said, really, I haven't even observed one here yet. They asked me about American births and I was able to share so many things and I think they were excited and taking it in.
So I was able to do my first delivery here and loved it! It's way more messy because they don't have disposable things like underpads, or wipes, or paper towels. It's hard to find sinks with soap to wash your hands. There are no towels once you do find them to dry your hands. There are lots of gloves. yay!
On the way home I got the nicest compliment. The head nurse that I had been working with all day said if she has another baby could I come back and deliver hers? She said "I can see how you care for the mama's". This blessed my heart so much, because they are so often talking in another language you're not sure what they are thinking.
