I had a wonderful day today! For my last day on this wonderful adventure I decided to go to Oxford! I made my plan of all I wanted to see and took off on the train this morning which wasn't difficult. As soon as I got off the train, I could see the very old buildings. This town is 800 years old!
I hadn't eaten breakfast yet and remembered that Monica said I should try a pasty. It was very good, with a very flakey crust and a shredded beef stew type thing inside. traditionally they are filled with meat, online and turnip.
It was pouring rain all day, but thankfully I had a hood on a jacket I brought. (first time to use it the whole trip!)
I walked into the first church I found open and started visiting with the pastor! Come to find out this was the very church John Wesley preached at! At the very same pulpit! I had a great time there, and felt the Holy Spirit in that beautiful church building!
After several book stores, I saw this very old "pub" serving scones and clotted cream. So I ducked out of the rain and had a spot of "tea"
I loved wandering this town of all these incredible old buildings and although I had a whole list of places I wanted to see, with the rain and a big funeral in town, it was a bit hard to get around. So for my last stop I decided to go see the pub that CS Lewis hung out in with his writing friends. I had just read a book about Joy, his wife and so it was fresh in my mind her descriptions of this place.
It's called the "Eagle and child". It was packed full when I came and then suddenly 2 tables opened and I sat next to a couple in the nook where the "inklings" writing group sat every Tue.. We got chatting and she also was so thrilled to be sitting in the very spot that CS Lewis and his friends spent hours visiting! I ordered a pretty normal dinner of chicken etc. I was trying to stay away from all the fried food that is common here. Fish and Chips, onion rings etc. So I took a picture of her dinner that was called the "Toad in the hole". Which is Yorkshire pudding (the crust) with mashed potatoes, sausage and gravy. We had such a nice visit and they ended up buying me tea and giving me a ride to the train station, which saved me a mile or so walk in the pouring rain!
