I think the most startling thing about this building is how your walking on these nice sweet Italian streets. Skinny streets, made of brick, 3-5 story buildings, with shutters or balconies. You can't see very far because they are tall. All of a sudden you come to the end of the street and there is a HUGE building. I mean huge. It seems Romans loved things really big. But for it to be in the middle of this nice typical neighborhood was just a WOW moment!
It was built in 125 AD! So it's super old. It was a temple, but changed to a Christian Church in 6th century. There is a hole in the top of the dome, so when it rains it comes in.
It didn't at all feel like a church, but a very incredible building.
