Tuscany: Siena and Monteriggioni

Updated: Mar 13, 2020

Had a beautiful day in Tuscany! We checked out of our beautiful airbnb farmhouse stay which was up a winding road where you could oversee the grapevines and rolling hills, dropped Teresa and Michelle off at the train station and Robin and I took off south.

We drove about 30 min when I saw this castle like structure in the hills, so I took an off-ramp and started off towards the castle.

The name of the town is Monteriggioni. At one point in history this town and Siena were enemies with Florence. So they needed protection of walls and being up on a hill top so they could see the enemies coming.

Next we went to Siena. I have always heard about Siena, so I was glad to visit it. It also is up on a hill top. But how sweet they are to have escalators to bring us up from the parking! Like probably 6 or 7 sets of them! We still walked about 4 miles, but if not for the escalators we would have been wiped out!

First we went into the cathedral. It was funny because first we come out of this skinny street and see the back of it. But it was so incredible we thought it was the front.

Then when we saw the front we were even more impressed!

Inside there is one statue that Michael Angelo made, so that was nice to see. Notice the curly hair and relaxed hand. I guess those are his style!

If you can see all those tiny people carved with so much detail, it just boggles your mind how they can do that out of marble.
